  • Alexie Article: Focus on identifying rhetorical devices/strategies. 

    • Choose 2 passages/quotes and write 2 dialectical journals (see toolbox handout) in your notebook. Then respond to the following questions: 

      • What is Alexie's attitude toward education? How does it differ from his society? 

      • What connections can you make to the text?

Francine Prose- "I Know Why the Caged Bird Cannot Read" pg. 87. 

Start your first read, doing left margin annotations. You will be choosing your vocab words in small groups for this article, so note any words that you needed to look up. We'll end up with about 10-15 words for the vocab quiz on this reading.

  1. What bothers you about the piece so far? 

  2. What is Prose's tone? What tells you? Identify specific examples wtih page and paragraph number. 

  3. What is Prose's attitude toward literature and today's education?

2nd read of Prose: focus on finding claim, examples of Logos (explain purpose), Ethos (identify how it's being used), and Pathos (explain the effect) and rhetorical devices/strategies.
